I am not sure when iLife stopped being issued on discs and maybe if you're lucky you can find something like iMovie 9 (if such a thing exists) on a used installer disc.
Now that they have gone to downloads only it puts users of older software in a real mess because it isn't like when you used to be able to go out and find old installer discs. I think any upgrades you may have wished for iMovie8 would have required payment, but Apple pulls anything except the newest versions from its site.
